What is an international transfer?

An international transfer is any transfer of personal data from within the European Economic Area (EEA) to a country outside of the EEA, referred to as a third country. 

An international transfer It is not legal unless certain rules are followed, and it normally means you need legal assistance. International transfers are NOT easy!

Article 46 says that transfers are legal so long as certain measures, called appropriate safeguards are taken to
  • protect not only the personal data, but also
  • respect data subject rights.
Article 49 has certain exceptions when an international transfer is legal, which are referred to as derogations.
